Silvercloak : Book Three of the King's Daggers
Published in Paperback by Avon (16 October, 2001)

Average review score:

You Can't Put It Down
I read the first book of The King's Daggers series in a hotel on the 4th of July. All through the fireworks I was waiting to get back to the book, which is called Sir Stalwart. There are three books in the series - Sir Stalwart, The Crooked House, and Silvercloak. All three are good but I consider Silvercloak the best. Now, if you want to read one of the series, I suggest you start with the first one, otherwise you'll have no idea what's going on.

Silvercloak's main characters are Stalwart and Emerald. Stalwart is a sort of undercover agent for King Ambrose, king of Chivial. His fondest wish is to become a King's Blade - one of the group of warriors that protects the king. Emerald is a White Sister - a person who is trained to detect magic.

Now the story is taking place during a time when Silvercloak, a famous assasin, is planning to kill King Ambrose. Silvercloak has already killed two armed Blades, which is no easy feat. Both Stalwart and Emerald are sent undercover to try and catch Silvercloak.

The beginning of the book mainly tells about Stalwart's and Emerald's going undercover. Stalwart becomes a stable boy in a town near Ironhall, the place where Blades are trained. It is believed that Ironhall is where the assasination attempt will take place. Emerald is placed in Ironhall, as a Blade-in-training, disguised as a boy.

Halfway through the book, the action begins. Stalwart chases Silvercloak to Ironhall and soon all the major characters are gathered there - Stalwart, Emerald, King Ambrose, and Silvercloak. The story goes on to the point where Stalwart is the only defense between the king and assasin as they are trapped on a catwalk with no other help in sight. So, if you want to find out whether, and, if so, how Stalwart and Emerald defeat the invincible assasin, you'll just have to read the book. After all, I can't tell you everything.

Silvercloak is an awesome book throughout, but personally, I think the ending is the best. Silvercloak would be among the top five if I had to make a list of my favorite books. And I read a lot too. It is a wonderful story, very exciting. Probably people that enjoy a sort of medievel story would like it best, but I think it would capture anyone's attention. As for age, it's probably best for ages 11 on up. Silvercloak is one of those books that you can't put down until you've finished it.

A compelling and easy read...you won't want to put it down!
Sir Stalwart, the arrogant, clever, skilled King's Dagger, and Emerald, the youngest of the White Sisters, must again face peril for their king, Ambrose. He is being targeted by Silvercloak, a skilled assasin who has never failed. To succeed, Wart has to again face degradation and the humilitation of being called a coward by those who used to be his closest friends, while Emerald must go where no woman has gone before-- to a pit of semi-sadistic boys and men. THis book is a relaxed read, one that seems to be over almost before it starts. You'll love it!

Slips That Pass in the Night: The King's English Adrift on the Campus
Published in Paperback by Laurel Graphics (01 December, 2001)

Slips of laughter
I found this an uproarously funny collection of writng bloopers. Anyone who has a sense of humor, be it latent warped will chuckle, laugh out loud and remember similarities from his English Composition days. The comments from the Professor in the margin are perfection. I can almost visualize him in the wee hours of the morning grading such "slips" and adding his humorous remarks. For an example, "The odor of smoke could be smelt on my hands." The Professor's margin comment is " It could have been herring." Another favorite is, "Even though I set and think, My hopes for answers sink and sink. So with the hour drawing neigh I'll take my "F" And say good-bye." Dr. Betts' marginal comment is "The grade is "F", be not distraught. At least you didn't get a nought."

The illustrations are well done for the selected "slips".
"Slips" is a quick delightful read that left me happy and wanting to share this priceless little gem with friends . It is the perfect gift for all. .

Slips That Pass in the Night: A Review
This is a VERY funny book--564 student bloopers assembled over forty years by a Professor of English with a sense of humor.
Howlers like this one: "We do not believe in executing the insane because they won't learn a lesson from it." And this one: "After leaving the game he collapsed on the sidewalk and died without medical assistance."
This happy little book is very cleverly organized and most imaginatively illustrated. It makes a great gift book. It gets five stars for laughter. --Parkman Blake, Sacramento, California

Southern Sierra Rock Climbing : Sequoia/Kings Canyon

Awesome Guide with great pictures
Great guide that includes tollhouse, squarenail, courtright, kings canyon, seqouia and all of the crags around this area. Very indepth and keeps up on the new routes.

Exactly what a guidebook should be
This is a very useful guidebook. It contains route photos, clear and detailed topos, and some verbal descriptions. Driving directions to climbing areas, first ascents and other information are also included. Both well-known and less-visited areas are described in detail. I used this book on a recent trip to Courtwright Reservoir and found it extremely helpful. The best aspect is probably the combination of easily understandable topos and photos of the routes -- many guidebooks only have one or the other.

Special Places to Stay British Bed & Breakfast, 6th
Published in Paperback by Sawday (01 December, 2001)
Author: Jackie King

Full of Bed & Breakfasts that are sure to delight...
My husband and I have traveled England, Scotland, and Wales using Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay: British Bed & Breakfast to select our accommodations and have had nothing but glowing reviews of each truly special place we stayed. Each entry includes a photograph, a brief written description of both the property and its owners, and a set of symbols that indicate accepted method of payment; smoking/non-smoking; and pet, child, handicapped & vegetarian facilities. The guide also includes maps and driving directions that are a welcome supplement to a more general atlas of major motorways.

Most properties are in out-of-the way locales that truly lend themselves to experiencing what makes each town and village in Britain unique. These are not cookie-cutter B&Bs; Sawday ensures that each place has a story to tell, whether it be flamboyant owners, gourmet food, organic farming methods, gorgeous gardens, or historically-interesting architecture. You really can't go wrong if you select accommodations from this book.

Beautifully illustrated and engaging book
Read this book in one sitting. Nice introductory book with a great variety of recipes. Interesting without being pretentious. I skim through it several nights a week because it is a nice way to relax.

A beautifully illustrated tea book that begs for a "cuppa".
Tea books come and go, but this is one of the best. M. Dalton King's beautifully illustrated and mouth-wateringly tempting book makes you want to head for the kitchen and put the kettle on to boil (don't forget to pre-heat the tea-pot too)

Awesome bible for the new believer to the well founded.
This is one of the easiest and most helpful bibles any Spirit Filled believer could own. A majority of our congregation use this bible for our everyday study and church. We sometimes jokingly refer to ourselvesd as the Jack Hayford bible cult.

Amazing.
This bible is great. It shows the original words
and tells you the in-depth meaning. Very
refreshing.

One of the most indepth & informational Bibles ever...
This Bible came highly recommended to me and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it! This Bible is packed with so much information and commentaries from world-famous (and not so famous) evangelists, preachers, pastors and teachers. I love the in-depth commentaries and the Greek word translations and also the "Kingdom Dynamics" and "Truth in Action" charts. All these are simple study tools to help anyone looking to understand the Bible more. I felt that I could dig deeper into the Truth. I use it for QT and for reading in general. I enjoy reading these study tools over and over again. Though, at first, I wasn't used to the New King James Version, and it did take some time to get used to. But, this particular Bible with a built in reference tool is very useful to any Christian who wants to study the Word more.

A "Must Have" for Anyone
The Spirit Filled Bible is one of the best Bibles I've ever bought. In fact, I'm on my second one! The Word Wealth, Kingdom Dynamics, Word References, and Study Notes are excellent and very helpful for anyone ranging from a new Christian to a seasoned veteran just looking for something special to treat themselves. This Bible is loaded with lots of extras that are practical, useful, easy to understand guides to help the reader to study and apply the Word to their everyday lives! I love it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good Bible.

Statistical Reasoning in Psychology and Education
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (December, 2002)
Authors: Edward W. Minium and Bruce M. King
Average review score:

Presents Statistics Conceptually
This is by far the best introductory text to statistics for students in the behavioral sciences I have come across.

The conceptual layout makes this textbook especially engaging. Unlike most statistics textbooks this one presents more difficult concepts in a step-by-step manner, which allows for better understanding.

The authors have done a superb job of explaining the logic behind the statistical procedures. This is important, for without this understanding one will likely misapply statistics and/or misread statistics.

In short, here one finds not only an introduction to descriptive and inferential statistics for behavioral scientists, but also a text that will give the reader a firm grounding in the logic behind statistics.

Well done!
As I read this book three things became apparent: one, the authors know their subject inside and out; second, they understand their beginning audience; last and most importantly they know how to teach. I strongly recommend this well written book to anyone needing to learn stats.

Stephen King: The #1 New York Times Bestsellers!: Dolores Claiborne/Insomnia
Published in Paperback by New American Library (November, 1995)
Author: Stephen King
Average review score:

King's Best!
Never has King done better. It's better than "The Shining" and "The Stand". King will have you riveted to your seat gasping for breath. I suggest an oxygen mask for this reading. It is simply fabulous. In "Insomnia", you never know where a twist will come. Of course, all his novels have been like that. But not like this. King takes you on a journey where the (finally) predictable turns upside down letting you fall. Buy the book! Its King's best!

Dolores Clairborne is the best!
This book made you think. The things that people go through can make you crazy. He put enough feeling into it to keep it real but, also enough craziness to give the tale a twist
